How to Maximise the Lifespan of Your Cargo Holds
Take care of your cargo holds and they’ll take care of you. Might sound cliché; however, it’s true. Cargo hold protection maximises the lifespan of your cargo holds.
Unprotected cargo holds suffer from two effects. One, their structure weakens from corrosion over time, which compromises the entire ship. Two, staining damage limits what it can transport and increases cleaning & operating costs.
On the other hand, cargo holds treated with a marine barrier enjoy greater longevity as well as optimal performance carrying a variety of cargoes over their full lifespan.
The reason marine barriers are such an effective form of cargo hold protection is because they create a barrier that separates the cargo from the hold. Our solution, for example, RBM HoldBlock®, forms a thin, flexible coating that shields the ship from the corrosive and staining effects of some cargoes. Furthermore, it’s 18x more effective than lime wash (lime wash is an older, less effective barrier, particularly when carrying sulphur).
The types of damaging cargoes it is especially effective against are those with corrosive properties, including salt, sulphur, and some fertilisers. Other problematic cargoes include heavy stainers like green delayed petcoke and coals.
Compromising your ships by continuing to use outdated solutions–or none at all–leads to inevitable, long-term failure of dry bulk transportation businesses. Because no business can remain successful while continuing to absorb the costs of shortcuts until the eventual demise of its biggest assets.
Marine barriers, aka hold blocks, are the most cost-effective way to maximise cargo hold protection, and your best line of defence against the destructive properties of the cargoes your ships carry.
RBM HoldSolutions® keeps cargo holds protected against the harmful effects of their cargoes. Our tested solutions are environmentally friendly and easy for crews to apply.
