Effective vessel cleaning is a top priority for dry bulk carriers operators looking to keep to their schedules and keep their workers safe while running a profitable business. It all takes careful planning by a diligent crew with access to proper cargo hold ship cleaning solutions and gear.

Cargo hold ship cleaning steps

  • Remove previous cargo residue
  • Remove loose paint and rust scale
  • Remove insect/animal infestations and nests
  • Clean bilge wells
  • Wash & dry
  • Apply coatings, e.g. a marine barrier

Steps will vary depending on the required level of clean a hold will be held to. Some holds need only to be shovel-clean. At the highest level, however, all previous cargo residue must be removed, as well as loose paint and rust scale and all signs of infestations. Bilge wells should be neutralised and cleaned and the entire hold washed down and dried. If the next cargo is a heavy stainer (containing petcoke or coal), or caustic in nature, a marine barrier should be applied. This not only protects the vessel but sets up the next cargo hold cleaning job to be quicker and easier.

Vessel cleaning gear

The right gear increases efficiency and efficacy. So, high- and low-pressure applicators should be available and in good-working order. Safety of the crew is also paramount. Access to PPE, including coveralls, gloves, goggles & particulate masks, improves their ability to get the job done faster and safer.
