Cargo Hold Cleaning Safety Standards
Cargo hold cleaning is a dangerous job for the people involved and the marine environment.
Crew are tasked with managing chemicals and working from heights. They use various mechanical systems and equipment to be able to reach all areas. They work in enclosed spaces and often in inclement weather. All of this is under time pressure to get the job done before reaching the next port.
Additionally, marine environments can be harmed by cargo hold cleaning discharge in the waste water. More sensitive environments suffer extensive harm.
To address these safety issues, standards were created. The International Safety Management (ISM) code provides high safety management standards for crew members involved in cargo hold cleaning as well as for the protection of marine environments. The Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC) informs on the transport of solid bulk cargoes and keeps updated the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code (IMSBC Code). The MARPOL Convention covers the “prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes”.
